All About ARC

(Bobby Fouther; Study in Black series, 2023)

Above is a painting from the Black Artists of Oregon exhibit that I recently saw at the Portland Art Museum. It reminds me of something Lusine, Carina’s sister, would paint, so I thought I would share it with you all.

09/25/2023 — For those of you who took the build-a-character quiz, I am still working on your scenes! You all built some wonderful characters, and I cannot wait to see them come to life in the world of To Favor Blood & Flowers. Today’s email will be pretty short, as I am starting my final quarter of graduate school. I can’t be getting behind on assignments in week one!

I wanted to take a little time to explain ARC reading. ARC stands for Advanced Reader Copy; this means that a book has been printed and published, but it is not yet available to the public. Some authors, especially self-publishing and indie authors, choose to send these ARC books to a select few readers. The best marketing strategy when sending out ARC copies is to collaborate with individuals who have a large social media presence, whether that be on TikTok, Instagram, or even Goodreads. The general goal of having ARC readers is that they read your book and do an honest review of it. ARC readers should be representative of customers in your market (e.g., typically chooses to read YA fantasy) and are willing to post their review of your book. Not only do reviews (especially more positive ones!) get people talking about your book, but it also helps to give a forecast of sorts to how well the book will do in your customer base after it is officially released to the public. Some authors use the success of ARC readers to determine how much money and effort they put into distribution.

I plan on using ARC readers to primarily get the word out about my book. Because I am not publishing through a publishing house/company, I have to do all my own marketing. I hope that a few reviews will help many others hear more about To Favor Blood & Flowers and get excited for an official release date!

As I look forward to the next few weeks, I think I want to start posting on social media again. I’d love to hear what kind of content you all would like to see! I plan to post on TikTok and Instagram while continuing edits and author emails to you lovely people. Send me bookish songs or trends if you find any good ones!

Much love and happy reading,

Gail ❤
