Tropes, Tropes, and Tropes

Writer's picture: Gail McCarthyGail McCarthy

11/11/2024 — Hi all! I took a bit of a hiatus to focus on my internship and my mental health, which included some dates with myself, re-reading comfort books, and a few main character moments. Now that my figurative cup has been refilled, I’m feeling inspired again. It is so good to be back!

Something I love about books—both reading and writing them—is the connection I have with others who also love similar books. Or, more specifically, love similar tropes.

For those unaware of the term, a trope relates to specific plot lines, character archetypes, and/or themes that are found across literature. Especially across romantic literature.

Here are a few of my favorite tropes to read, and I’ll throw in some book recommendations that fit the trope as well!

  • Fake Dating

    • The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

  • Enemies to Lovers

    • Yes: The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen

    • No: Zodiac Academy… more of a bully romance, but too much in my personal opinion!

  • Forced Proximity

    • I love this trope, but I have yet to see it written well. Most of the books I’ve read with this trope were Hallmark-esqe and cute, but nothing I’d recommend to my lovely, fellow readers. If you know of a good book with this trope, I’d love to hear about it!

  • Grumpy/Sunshine

    • It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey

  • Hockey Romance

    • Sleet series by S.J. Tilly

    • You’ve been warned about the cringey titles in this steamy series, so just disregard them.

  • Found Family

    • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

    • Full disclosure… I haven’t read this series. (Don’t hate me, fans of the books!) However, I have seen the characters and storyline adapted within the Netflix show Shadow and Bone. These characters and their connection to each other really come alive in this TV series and in every fan-art portrayal of them I’ve seen.

  • He Falls First

    • Book Lovers by Emily Henry

I’ve worked to incorporate some tropes into my own book, To Favor Blood & Flowers. Some that you might find in my series are Enemies to Lovers, Friends to Lovers, Forbidden Love (I know—all three of these romantic tropes in one series, what?!), “Who Did This”, One Bed, and Fake Marriage. There may be a few more… but I can’t spoil too much!

What’s your favorite trope?

Much love and happy reading,

Gail ❤

P.S. - Happy 11/11— make a wish!
