03/13/2023 — I am thrilled to share a little bit more about me and my book… and editing… and marketing… and self-publishing. You get the jist.
Let’s start with an introduction. Hi, I’m Gail! I’m an indie author who is working to publish my debut novel this year. WooHoo! I juggle writing with being a full-time graduate student and a part-time employee. I won’t lie—it’s a lot! Writing has always been my safe space, so I make it a priority to carve out at least an hour once a week to work on my book. That’s the ideal, of course. Finals week (AKA: this week) may or may not be an exception.
When I have a break from school and can pick up a non-academic book, I’m a big fan of YA fantasy and contemporary romance. Some favorites: Throne of Glass series (Sarah J Maas), Book Lovers (Emily Henry), The Love Hypothesis (Ali Hazelwood), and the Graceling series (Kristin Cashore). I’ll wait while you write them down.
Yes, the Throne of Glass series is eight books. Write it down.
If you have recs for me, please send them my way! While I try (and fail) to stick to a TBR schedule, I still love adding new reads to my list!
If I’m not reading or writing or studying or TikToking or researching or working (phew, I need to take a breath…), I’m usually watching Lord of the Rings. The og trilogy, the prequel trilogy, or the new series—I’m not picky! I love them all.
Now, let’s get a little bit into why you’re really here: my book!
I started To Favor Blood & Flowers in October of 2015, and it began only as scribbled notes in journals. I would jot down character descriptions as they came to me or random scenes that popped into my mind. Yes, a lot of those first scenes were only romance with little to no plot. It was amazing.
Eventually, I had a clear enough idea about a handful of characters that I started transferring my journals into online documents. Over the next five years or so, I solidified a plot, a backstory, and the entire cast of characters. And that was it. I was supposed to write one book. One. Book.
My characters had other ideas.
In the last two years finishing To Favor Blood & Flowers, my characters wanted to go on more adventures and cause more trouble. That was when I realized that this was going to be a trilogy. It wasn’t fair to trap these character arcs in one novel; they deserved more page time!
It is now March of 2023. I have a writing team at my side, my manuscript has been beta read, and my editor is finishing her second read-through this week! We’re on the road to publishing later this year, and I am so excited to share Carina and her friends and family with you soon!
