Wildest Dreams (Gail's Version)

Writer: Gail McCarthyGail McCarthy

05/22/2023 — Writing a book has been one of the most fulfilling things I have accomplished in my life so far. And yet… these edits feel like my brain is being brutally dragged through the mud. It’s worth it, don’t get me wrong, but this part is definitely the least fun as an author.

What I need is a reminder. I need to remember all the wild dreams I had when writing To Favor Blood & Flowers. So, you and I are going to go on a tour of my wildest author dreams (in no specific order), and maybe—just maybe—I can write them into existence.

Number 1: Hold a physical copy of my book

Okay, yes. Technically I've already done this because I had the first full draft of my manuscript printed at Staples just for me. (And yes, I still pull it out from time to time just to gaze and smile at the pieces of dead tree). But, this dream is really to hold my complete, published book in my hands. And maybe give it a hug. I’ll definitely be sobbing, and I hope none of you have to witness it.

Number 2: Participate in an author interview

Full transparency here folks; I might practice this one in the shower. I love talking about and fangirl-ing over To Favor Blood & Flowers. While it is my own book, my characters had a mind of their own for a lot of it. I was just around for the ride… and the major plot points. I’m really excited to someday (hopefully) answer questions about Carina, Emeline, Aleck, and the rest of the lot!

Number 3: Become popular on TikTok

I might have actually cringed as I typed this one out. It sounds shallow, I know that, but I’m not the one I want to become popular. I want my book to become popular, and maybe not just on TikTok. It would be no less than an honor to know that other people connect with Carina’s story as I have. And if in any way my book could bring someone a smile or the courage to speak up, then my job will be done. Don’t worry, I won’t stop writing all together. There’s still two more books in the works!

Number 4: Write another series

I was going to say “write another book”, but I know myself too well. It will most likely be a trilogy, maybe a prologue too. Prologue series? Nope, I need to cut myself off. Prior to finishing the To Favor Blood & Flowers manuscript, I had played around and started a few books in different genres. Don’t get me wrong, writing fantasy is amazing. I’ll hopefully write more someday, but there is so much else out there. Historical (war-torn love story, anyone?), contemporary romance (all the rage, must include either fake dating or enemies to lovers), post-apocalyptic (zombie apocalypse novels take the top spot, fight me), or poetry (of which I already have over 200 poems that need to be organized). Where should I head next?

All right. Time to hit the local coffee shop, buy an overpriced (and iced) caramel macchiato, and dive into those edits. These dreams won’t happen all on their own.

Much love and happy reading,

Gail ❤
